First, how is your disk arranged? If you have separate partitions for root and home, you can re-install without reformatting the home partition. If you have everything on the same partition, don't do that on your next computer!

If you've got just one partition and you don't want to restore everything from backups (you do have backups, I hope?), then when the installation program asks you what you want, chose "upgrade" and not "install". It will take a very long time, as every single file has to be checked to see if you've got it in the correct version, but you shouldn't have any problems.

Uh. Some people have a different opinion about upgrading Fedora Core to Fedora. I've done FC6 to F7 to F8 and I myself though that was stretching it. Point is, much changes and fast, and FC5 is really old, so a clean install of F8 and then merging user data in /home and updating config settings in /etc would be be a less errorprone approach. Of course you don't have to take that advice, just ask yourself if you're feeling lucky today :-]
