updating rpm with tar?


I have clanlib 6.5.x installed on suse 9.1 with the rpm that came with it. how do i update it with the clanlib 7.7 stuff in the tarball. is it ok to just ./configure make make install? do i need to uninstall the rpm first?

well first lemme caution you against using a tar ball on a rpm based distro...however having sadi that. After you untar it look for a file that is called either README or INSTALL, that should tell you how to proceed

In general, you can't update an rpm installation with a newer tarball package. Tar doesn't have that option.
However, check out checkinstall, which allows you to go through the tarball installation and create an rpm in the process, which you can then use to rpm -U an existing rpm installation to effect an upgrade.
Also, for tarball installations. Remove the rpm. Install the tarball using something like stow or encap. Thereafter, if you find an upgrade for a tarball you've installed via stow or encap, you can upgrade the tarball via the same stow or encap to the newer version. These last two sort of fill in a gap in package management in re tarballs.
