updating mplayer
 
i origanally installed mplayer from source on my red hat system. i want to update mplayer to the current release. do i need to uninstall my old mplayer version before isntalling my new one. or is there a easy way of doing this.

I usually uninstall when installing a newer version.

Look at the home page for mplayer.
 
You can get CVS versions whenever you want! It'll update automagically!

not really much benefit from going from CVS, any source release will naturally install to the same place, but CVS doesn't contain ffmpeg coedcs and such like

I never bother uninstalling when installing a new version of mplayer.I just make sure the codecs.conf,input.conf and menu.conf matches the version I'm using.If you're using the cvs version,make sure you copy the libavcodec directory from the cvs of ffmpeg to the mplayer directory.
