Updating Debian 5.0 Compiler

When I tried to compile Ekiga 3.5, I received an "internal compiler error" at the end of the "make" process. The consensus on the web seems to be that the compiler in Debian 5.0 needs to be updated to gcc-4.4. Since it does not seem to be in the Debian 5.0 repository, I downloaded it from a Debian webpage. However, I am at a loss as to what the next steps are. After I unpack the downloaded file using Archive Manager, I then have a folder containing: 1) data and control tar ball files, which undoubtedly need to be unpacked; 2) debian-binary, control and md5sums files and 3) a usr folder containing bin, lib and share folders. Any thoughts on what the next steps should be would be appreciated.

Where, exactly, did you get gcc 4.4 from Debian? Even the unstable branch is only on 4.3.

It's in Squeeze.

Ohoho.

See if you can build it from Squeeze?

Here is a link for gcc-4.4.1-1:
