Updating a custom-compiled kernel

I have been working on getting the 2.6.3 kernel to compile and run. I enabled a couple of features after compiling the kernel. Do I have to run make clean, make modules and make modules-install again or can I just do a make bzImage and copy that to /boot?

short answer:
make modules_install

Longer answer:
It depends on what changes you made. If you know what you're doing, you'll know whether the kernel will care about the changes you've made - for instance, if all you did was add some previously unselected filesystem modules, you might get away with just changing modules. If you added things to compile into the kernel, you definately need a new bzImage.

The safest thing to do is recompile the whole thing - image, modules and all.

Oh, okay. Well I'll recompile this weekend. I am going to get the 2.6.3 kernel to work one of these days.

Have a good one,
