Unhappy Updates to SAMBA -- Oops!

I want to upgrade Samba from 2.2.1a to 2.2.3a -- I downloaded 2.2.3a from the Samba web site as a tarball into my root directory. I issued the tar command against this file and a new group of files were added to my root directory under a directory named Samba-2.2.3a - I issued the MAKE and MAKE INSTALL and everything compiled and installed without error. Unfortunately the install put the executables in the directory usr/local/samba/bin. The prior Samba executables were in the directory etc/samba as well as the smb.conf file. When I start Samba, it starts with the old version. HOW DO I GET RID OF THE OLD VERSION AND HAVE THE NEWER VERSION START WHEN I ISSUE THE START COMMAND??

in the /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start script the location of the smb.conf and executables are given, you need to point that to your new location so that your new samba will start
