updatedb problem

Ive been trying to install a driver for my linksys wmp11 pci card onto mandrake 10.1 and one tutorial told me to run the updatedb command so i did and ever since then i have been limited as to what i can do from the command line. when i try to install the prism driver .rpm version i get errors that two large hex numbers dont match. when i run a make config command for the orinoco driver i get a message that says the source kernel has not been installed. i am running kernel 2.6.8. i guess it was the updatedb command that screwed this up but why? also how can i solve this? thank you.

Hi

i can't solve your prob, but maybe i can explain what has happend. the updatedb comand does exactly that, ie, it updates a database. the database is basically a snapshot of your file system. so when you run the locate command ie

locate somefile

locate will search the updatedb databse for somefile. it's quicker and more efficient than having to search the hard drive for files. although updatedb is usually run by cron daily. it's a good idea to do it once a week yourself as all the files you have created won't be in the database until updatedb is run. Make sense????????

secondly it sounds like you don't have the kernel source code installed, which you need. download it, install it and try again.

hope this helped somehow!

regards
GT
