update issues

I have an HP laptop with mint 18 installed. The latest updates when finished had eliminated all access to internet. Can't even get icon to appear to reload internet. Will not let me undo update. Any ideas this laptop is only used for gaming just need internet access.

Could you please go into the Update Manager, select View->History of Updates, and let us know which packages were updated in the update that caused the problem.

Ok. Please enter the following command:

Code:
cat /var/log/apt/history.log
and paste here everything at the end of the output from the update that caused the problem onwards.

Note that you should also be able to run most things from the command line in the meantime e.g. mintupdate for the Update Manager.

I don't quite understand. What do you mean by the "terminal went back to ready screen". Did it not output any information at all in the Terminal window? Did it just go onto the next line? Did the Terminal window close?

On the line where the cursor is flashing in the Terminal window, what does it say?

For example, my one says:

Code:
hydrurga@350V5C ~/data/inxi $

Did you reboot after the update?

Otherwise there's CLI ways to make things work. Not needed if the reboot works. Kernel updates and such can require a reboot. (windows style, oy)

Does it boot to a gui? Or boots to a blinking cursor? For debian I have to Control+Alt+2 to get to a login, it boots to 1 which I assume is waiting on a gui, which I don't boot to with my setup. I use startx from the CLI, via xinit and .xinitrc.

If it doesn't even get that far, your bootloader and /etc/fstab might not be pointing at the right device. I tend to boot from USB devices and /dev/ naming doesn't work so well as the /dev/sd?? changes depending on which port or how many storage things I have plugged in. Using labels or uuids in grub.cfg and fstab works more reliably. All assumptions since I don't know anything about what you're seeing just yet. Or NOT seeing.

You may have hit the dreaded virtualbox bug. Numerous Mint users have reported similar symptoms after recent updates. Try typing:
Code:
sudo apt-get purge virtualbox-guest-dkms virtualbox-guest-utils virtualbox-guest-x11

update issues

OK Since I am receiving multiple responses I will start over so we are all on same page. I have had this laptop for 2 years It is an HP 1119 loaded with Mint 18. Every time it required updates they were installed without any problems except this last time. After latest updates I could no longer access internet in fact all icons on right side of taskbar disappeared except for clock which relocated to left side next to menu button. Some of the replys I got were to go to upload manager I can access main menu select update manager menu disappears (as it always does) BUT thats it nothing ever pops up so I can't do update manager. I also was given several commands to enter into terminal Every time a hit enter terminal would want to start new line with never a response to inputed request.. I have rebooted at least 15 times and nothing. Thats where I'm at hope you can help. P.S. wife uses this only for gaming nothing else was ever asked for.and I have 2 other computers with same OS and no problems with them
