Up2date, RPMS, need for an effective update solution

hi ppl and merry christmas...

I recently had to recover my RH7.3 system from a HHD failure, which was not the most enjoyable part of my week.

I have returned my box to its former glory and it is providing services once again! However i decided i better update 7.3 since it is growing old. Previously i have merely downloaded specific packages that i required from rpmfind.net , freshrpms.net or whereever the required file can be found! now it has come to the point where there is a large amount of rpms needed to be updated, so i tried out 'up2date' to see what it was like (after registering and all). Now RHN is all great and wonderful and seems to take alot of the pain away from updating IF u have a fast internet connection, which i dont, hence trying to download 200+ packages would take me into the next century probably

However i have obtained a complete set of updated packages on cd from a mirror site.I would like to update my system using this set of RPMs but have encountered a few problems.

i was going to use rpm -Uvh *.rpm on the whole directory of RPMS but realise the -U actually installs packages which are currently not there!! not good for me since i dont want 1500+ packages installed.

So to my question is there an option with rpm -U that will only update packages on the sytem and not install all the new ones from the cd/dir??

Or is there a way with 'up2date' where u can dump all the rpms in /var/spool/up2date and get the prog to use that set of rpms??

Or is there another way to do this??

(i have run up2date -p to sycro the machine and RHN)

any help is muchly appreciated!!

Ed.

Perhaps try using the -F instead of -U. -F is for freshen which states it will upgrade a package only if an earlier version is installed.

Hope this helps

I've been using this on one of my boxes:

autoupdate

I'm thinking of dumping RHN in favour of it ...
