Unsupported DVD Format with latest k9copy and 2.6.20.7
 

I recently switched from the distributed 2.4 kernel that Slackware 11 shipped with to the 2.6.20.7 kernel. Since then, some of the DVDs I back up show as an unsupported format in one of my DVD players, although others will still play them.
I am using the latest stable version of k9copy and until now I have not had any problems. Does anyone have an idea as to what this format problem is?

Do you have libdvdcss installed?

Yes. I can copy DVDs and play them in my Blu-Ray player but not in the DVD player in my BOSE system. But prior to the upgrade of my kernel, the DVDs worked in any DVD player.

Does anyone around here use k9copy? If not, can someone tell me what other programs work for copying movies (DVDs) in Linux. k9copy is great when it works but it seems that with every small upgrade I do, something goes wrong with it.

K3B is what i use for making copies, or just go oldschool and CLI with dvdcopy

Can you copy commercial DVDs/movies with K3b? K9copy can use K3b for the actual burning of the disc but not for ripping(?) it.
Will dvdcopy shrink the movie to fit on one 4.7G dvd? I guess I need to research this stuff more but if you can help me, thanks!

no it is not dvdshrink, it is more like nero for linux. it can copy most DVDs. for ripping you would need something like DVD::RIP. as for resizing them, i never mess with that as storage space is cheap and i just rip my DVDs to my HDD and watch them via a NFS share to my media box in the living room. makes the DVDs last longer and the kids do not scratch them.

I agree! I would like to do the media box in time but I also like having backups since having a media box at every TV in my house isn't practical.
I assume the clarity of the video output is as good as with the regular dvd player? I have a couple 55" and 60" tvs. Will there be a noticeable reduction of quality/clarity when coming from the media box?

Did you manage to work around this issue? I am having the same problem here. I use k9copy to backup my dvds and protect them from "kid effect". But sometime ago (it might be kernel upgrade related, I am not sure) most of the dvds I backup dont play in my Bose! So, we have a similar setup... Do you want to solve it together?
