unresponsive file managers
 

Hi all...

Just wondering if anyone can help me figure out/solve my file managers from hanging. I use thunar most of all, then caja and finally nautilus. thunar is the fastest but crashes from time to time (dunno why, but it's when I'm moving files) caja seems to not crash but is really slow to open directories and list the contents. nautilus is the worst. it takes forever to do anything at all.

My first assumption is that the system or the file manager is caching files. if that's so, how do I turn off or tweak that feature. thunar "used to" hang pretty badly as soon as I opened it but after submitting a thread someone suggested that I tweak my mount problems as most lag in file managers are mount issues. I installed a few packages and thunar really doesn't hang anymore and the remote folder shows if I am logged in via goa. (I am currently not) thunar still crashes from time to time when copying files. usually I am overwriting files with the same name. (for instance, my "Templates" folder has directories containing icon sets so there is LOTS of files) and I am constantly overwriting files when editing icon sets. so I am lost when thunar crashes. I hope I'm not losing data when that happens :(

caja and nautilus still take a very long time to list the contents of ANY folder.

What distro/version and what desktop/window manager are you using?

Are you mounting network shares? (There's another LQ thread about that, but I wasn't able to find it.)

I have an idea. I'm not very optimistic about it, but it might turn up something: Try starting the file managers from the command line, one at a time. They might throw an informative error to the terminal.

Arch multilib and compiz. While I understand that compiz may slow things down a bit it should not slow it down THIS MUCH. I haven't really thought about trying a different window manager but I'll check out xfwm4 and metacity and see if there's a difference. I never thought of running it in a terminal, hmmm. Thanks.

Just a point of help. I am a thunar user for years now --just a matter of need for speed, convenience and simplicity. I have experienced the same problem you are having now. But as far as I remember it was a library issue. Usually things like this will go away when library needs are satisfied. Take note that Thunar (or most of Xfce applications) are developed to run above Gnome or KDE libraries, and I found out that they run very well and fast. So try to check your version of Thunar and google for the library versions they need. The point is, Xfce applications do well when their versions of Gnome/KDE libraries are installed in your system.

By the way, try run Gnome services in a session and thunar should run best this time.

scarrz, no offense, but your original post doesn't give much palpable info, other than "file moving is slow"...

things that might be of interest:

• hardware specs
• what were these wonder packages that helped, how exactly did you install them, and which exact problem did they fix?
• what happens to the files you move, when thunar crashes? data loss?
• open thunar from a terminal and try to reproduce the problem. maybe you will find interesting output in the terminal window
