Unnecessary vertical lines in OpenOffice Document while setting margins by mouse

Dear Linux brotherhood,

After a complete switchover from Windows at the beginning of 2007, I have been using Debian Linux for the past seven months. I have Athlon64 systems with integrated graphics chipsets from ATI (RS482) and VIA (KM800). I predominantly use OpenOffice Document. One minor glitch is while setting paragraph indents and tabs by mouse. A vertical line appears down along the screen possibly to show the relative distance of the text. However, after finishing the setting, it should have disappeared. But it is not. It distorts viewing and refuse to go until the screen is changed or another window is superimposed. In tables, it appears as if it were a table column.

I recently tried many other Distributions to check for the same problem. It does appear, however with varying degrees. To be clear, in some themes of the Gnome desktop environment, in some latest versions of OpenOffice (2.2 and later) and in VIA chipset, it is very minimal. When I was exploring the possibilities, I found an option in PCLinuxOS in its display (graphical server) settings. It allows to use EXA instead of XAA (I may not be exactly correct in the acronyms). It claims that use of EXA provides better rendering and composite performance. When I changed the setting to use EXA, the screen is so smooth and those lines never appear. One more thing is that in the 'Devices' section of xorg.conf file in PCLinuxOS, there is a line corresponding to that setting, which reads something like Option “Accel...” “EXA”. In Debian, there is no such setting.

Now, what I ask is, can I edit the same file in Debian to include this line? I fear for system crash because I have such a volume of important research papers, project reports and thesis works. Otherwise, is there any other option to address this problem?

Let me thank in advance.
A.M. Tony Allwyn.

Only one Idea:

What happens, if you switch "use OpenGL" (Extras - Settings - Looks) (since I use the german version I can't say where to find it exactly).

Greetings

Dear ToK

Thank you very much for the reply.

I found the solution yesterday night in the manuall page relating to Radeon graphics cards. There is the option of enabling EXA (instead of XAA) in xorg.conf file by adding the line "Option" "AccelMethod" "EXA". Now it is ok.

Again, dear ToK, thank you for caring.
