unknown bridge resource?

i just built my own kernel version 2.4.18 on a mandrake 8.1 machine. all went well and the machine runs fine. except that when i first boot it, it get a really nice rendering of a small penguin and an error message that says:

unknown bridge resource: 0. assuming transparent

then it continues on to boot normally and run fine. any idea why this would occur and what it means?

Mandy is becoming a lot like RedHat in that it doesn't handle a self-compile as gracefully as most. You probably enabled some aspect of the kernel that it is not currently able to deal with so it ignored it. Ethernet bridging, maybe something SMP, who knows. You may want to check out 'dmesg' to see if there's something nifty there that isn't in the 'dmesg' from the Mandy stock kernel.

Cheers,

Finegan

i *think* that that's just a very normal boot message that for some reason doesn't get suppressed by the "quiet" option on boot. it's nothing to worry about

but but but... ;-)

hmmm. i want to believe that, but it only started after i upgraded my kernel. didn't do it for the old kernel. unless its a feature of the new kernel...an unsuppressable error message at boot time! it would make me suspect some microsoft engineers are on the planning team. grin.

In Slack, i've also gotten an unknown bridge resource:assuming transparent error in my syslog every bootup with no other error messages in syslog, debug, or messages files. There's no resource problems or program problems to indicate that it's actually doing anything to my system. It may be a MB specific bridge resource that Linux can't/won't interpret. So no worries I say, moderator man Kewpie is probably very correct to say not to worry.

correct? well that'd be a first

yeah, i get it with some kernels too, i think it's just a change in the code somewhere. I'm not sure what it means *BUT* chances are you don't have a bridge resource, so it is unknown.... etc....
