UNIX command to identify a system's IP address

Im a newbie. I have two questions. I installed Red hat 9.0 a few days ago. I thought I set it up to install the text mode but when it rebooted, it rebooted to graphics mode and I need to know how to change it back to text mode.

Also I need to know the command that will tell me the IP address of the machine it's running on. I turned DHCP on when I turned it on but don't know how to identify the address of the machine so I can remote boot into it.

Any help would be appreciated

as root if you edit the file /etc/inittab you will see a line that says:
id:5:initdefault
the 5 is telling it to boot you directly to X..
if you change the 5 to a 3 to look like:
id:3:initdefault
you will boot directly to the console...instead of the X Windows...
as for finding the ip address and assuming your connection to the internet is using eth0, you will issue the following:
/sbin/ifconfig eth0

You don't have to specify eth0

/sbin/ifconfig will list all connections

If your internet connection uses dial-up or pppoe the IP number will show up on the ppp0 interface in the output from "/sbin/ifconfig -a"
