That may have been an empty panel -- I'll have a look at some point in a VM and see whether I can replicate it. Nothong wrong with Linux Lite I'm sure but if you're used to Ubuntu then Xubuntu (Ubuntu with XFCE as default) or Linux Mint Mate (based upon Ubuntu) are probably worth a shot as the change will be less.
I suspect that Ubuntu doesn't run the XFCE configuration wizard on install as that usually does most of the work for you getting started.

Nah, Skype is missing dependencies with Linux Lite based on 14.04. And the Skype download page offers a version for 12.04 but not 14.04. I'll have to limp and struggle with slow slow ubuntu 12.04 until Skype writes a version for 14.04.

Otherwise, Linux Lite seemed okay at first glance. Won't know until I install it, and I won't do that until I absolutely have to. Don't want to dump 12.04 for fear that 14.04 Linux Lite might be worse.

Always frustrating work-arounds. Ubuntu has become nearly as cumbersome as windows.

Linux Lite is not Ubuntu. Please take some time to look into the different Linux distributions and how they relate to each other.
