Uninstalling software

Morning everyone.

I have a question regarding how to uninstall software.

Specifically, I am referring to software that has been installed by the source. RPM's are simple enough.

What is the best way to uninstall software that has been installed via the source? I am trying to uninstall some software that I installed and I want to make everything very clean, with no left overs. I want to start all over so I do not want any residue left over that may impact the reinstall.

Any suggestions or tips? I really do appreciate it.

uninstalling tarballs

Some tarballs come with a make command to uninstall themselves, most do not. I
solved this problem by using checkinstall to create RPM packages from tarballs.
You do the compile as normal. Instead of issuing make install you issue
checkinstall. checkinstall does the make install command for you. It also
creates and installs a RPM package. If you want to uninstall the package you
can do so with rpm. You can find checkinstall at:

The create an RPM (or pkgtool-package in Slack) way
would probably be easiest, since it's quite hard to
follow up whether a software package also modified
some configuration files (like eg webmin changes
/etc/rc.d/rc.local on install).

Happy hunting!

Cheers,
Tink
