Uninstalling software

Been having a pig of a time trying to get Java installed on my system. From other posts, it doesn't seem uncommon. Anyway, after much messing I decided to try and uninstall java and try again. I am struggling to do so. I have even deleted the directory (j2re-1.4.2_06) which contained the java files. My system still thinks it's installed.

What have I missed?

Yum remove jre
apt-get remove jre
rpm -qa | grep jre
rpm -e jre<bunch-of-numbers> which you got from the previous command.
