Uninstalling MySQL

I have a test server which i am using to learn about linux. Poor thing takes a beating. I was playing around with MySQL permissions and reset the root account permissions, doh!. So i can login to MySQL db but cannot do anything. I have tried to put the permissions back but i don't have permission. There is absolutely nothing of any importance in the database and its version 3. I wouldn't mind removing MySQL completely and reinstalling version 4.
So my question is how do you uninstall software (specifically MySQL) under linux??

thank you for help as always
