uninstall programs?

I have a question about how to update programs.

-I use a Mandrake 9.1, and most of my programs a rpm installed. How can I upgrade them? Do I have to remove the whole packages? It would be quite painful because I would like to upgrade KDE and that would force me to uninstall most of my packages because of dependancies!!
Can I run a classic installation with ./configure;make;make install? Will it succeed?

-Concerning the programs that were installed in the configure/make/make install way, how can I uninstall them or upgrade them? For example I installed Fluxbox with the tarballs. How will I upgrade it when a new version is released?

Thanks for your help.

If you want to upgrade an rpm ,get the new rpm and issue (as root) rpm -Uvh packagename.rpm
