Uninstall Gstreamer?
Is there a possible way to have a Gnome-based desktop without Gstreamer? I'm perfectly happy giving up Totem, and whatever other media things depend on it, but I have a hard time believing that the desktop itself "requires" Gstreamer. I would much rather use Mplayer or VLC for any of my multimedia needs.
Any way to do this? Synaptic tells me that basically everything is dependent on Gstreamer's existence. I'm inclined to believe that it will in fact uninstall various Gnome desktop components; but what I don't believe is that they are necessary, especially if you're going to use Xine or VLC instead. (Or if, say, you don't plan on having any A/V going on, but that's not me in particular.)
Please, no replies saying essentially, "You don't want to do this". Because I do want to do this. I really actually do want Gnome but not Gstreamer. It, and Totem etc., have never, even to this very day, worked anything like I would like them to out of the box. Why have useless crap... VLC "just works", know what I mean? =)
