Unable to watch DVD in GNU/Linux Debian 4.0

When I attempt to use either mplayer, vlc or ogle to play DVDs I get hundreds, or thousands of errors, with no visual output. Why does this happen, and what can I do about it?

Install dvdcss2 and see if it works:

http://download.videolan.org/pub/lib...2.9-1_i386.deb

Use 'sudo dpkg -i /path/to/libdvdcss2_1.2.9-1_i386.deb'
