So maybe trying to upgrade to a version that's no longer supported is your problem. Is there any reason for choosing such an old version?

My recommendation is to back up all your data and do a fresh reinstall of a supported Ubuntu following these instructions:
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop
This will save you much time and aggravation vs. trying to upgrade your existing 8.10.

When I was using Ubuntu, I never had an on-line upgrade fail from 8.04 until Unity became the default desktop and I left Ubuntu.
Ubuntu 8.10 reached end of life in 2010, as did 9.04 and 9.10. All intervening versions up through 13.04 have also reached EOL. Only LTS versions from that time (8.04.x) are still supported. Perhaps that has bearing on this.

Hi, I have successfully installed Ubuntu 12.04.
surendra@ubuntu:~$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS
Release: 12.04
Codename: precise
surendra@ubuntu:~$
But while booting ,when i enter Ubuntu it is showing 4 options to choose including DOS and XP in recovery mode.
I am just choosing the first one.
