Post Unable to set display in xterm or use any xterm related commands in Ubuntu


I am getting the following error message when xhost command or any xterm related command.

root@ubuntu-vm2:/etc/init.d# xhost +
No protocol specified
xhost: unable to open display ":0"

Are you, perhaps, accessing a virtual guest? Is that what "ubuntu-vm2" means?
Looks like you might not have an X-server running on your virtual guest... you can't open a display because it's not created one, just a tty terminal. As for xterm...you'd have a similar issue if no X server was running.
Can you ssh into the guest?
