unable to set 'window focus follows mouse click'

I did something unknown, now I'm unable to 'click' to focus. Everything on Xubuntu 14.04 desktop, XFce4 panel, and in apps, follows mouse pointer and loads, closes, focuses. Also have app menu bar(File-Edit-View, etc)in panel instead of app window.
Tried Unity window tweak, Compiz, system settings, dconf+gconf editors, etc. All indicate 'focus follows click', but that is not the case.
I'm at a loss for how to activate /return to "mouse click focus"
Thanks

first of all, welcome to the forums!

your post is lacking a little structure, you seem to be talking about more than 1 problem.
let's focus on "unable to set 'window focus follows mouse click'" for now.

first of all, unity tweak and compiz have nothing to do with Xubuntu and you should probably uninstall them.
then, in XFCE's Settings, there's an icon called window settings or similar. there you will find options to adjust the focus model (there's at least 2 different menu points concerning the window manager, just try both until you find it).

Xubuntu uses the xfce4 desktop environment. unity is a different DE; they don't mix.

Thanks ondoho.
Have tried all the different XFCE4 settings. Removed Compiz and unity tweaks, and unity. Still unable to prevent mouse pointer focus from opening/closing windows, apps. Tried 'mouse hover' also, w 'single click', 'double click', etc. Noting changes, despite the mouse settings in any of the XFCE settings set as 'mouse click'.

have a look at this page:
http://docs.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-settings/start
...going down a bit, you find "Window manager".
click it.
go down a bit, you find this:
http://docs.xfce.org/xfce/xfwm4/preferences#focus
that's the setting that influences your focus model.

obviously you have to find the corresponding dialog on your own desktop menu.

the way i understand it, you accidentally changed it to "focus follows mouse" and just have to change it back to "click to focus".

Ondoho, I followed you instructions above. 'Click to focus' already selected, and still had same problem. However found an app "mousetweaks" which I deleted and problem is no gone. However I still have menu bar for apps, @ krusader in panel, and not in krusader, Firefox, etc. See attachment screenshot.
Thanks.

geof370, you are mixing desktop environments. you shouldn't do that.
krusader belongs to the kde desktop environment (see my wikipedia link from earlier), but you have xfce.

you can't just wildly install apps and then complain when things don't work.

a good rule of thumb: if an app you want to install wants to pull in piles of dependencies (like i'm sure krusader did), then you should have a closer look.
actually you should always have a closer look.

linux is very customizable, but it also makes you responsible.

i don't quite get your problem with krusader. but, uninstall it, then open a terminal and type "sudo apt-get autoremove", and reboot, and repeat the last step.
