Unable to run Adobe Reader 7

Hi all

I have Red Hat Linux 9 and was trying to install Acrobat reader 7. It uses GTK version 2.4 or above. So firstly i installed GTK2.8( for which i have to install Glib, Cairo, Pango, Atk. These are installed in /opt directory and not in their usual directory. I was able to run gtk-demo program after i installed GTK, which means that GTK 2.8 is working fine. Then i put path of GTK lib directory in LD_LIBRARY_PATH (LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/glib/lib:/opt/gtk/lib).

Now i installed Adobe reader from a .tar.gz package containing an INSTALL script. It doesn't gave any error while installing. But when i try to run acrobat reader( which is in the bin directory of Acrobat installation) it gives me the following error::

/usr/local/Adobe/bin/acroread: relocation error: /opt/gtk/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: pango_ellipsize_mode_get_type

Please help me

Don't use RH9 - upgrade the distro ... don't use adobe reader, what is wrong with evince?

Now that's out of the way... the error:
/opt/gtk/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: pango_ellipsize_mode_get_type
... means you have an undefined sumbol in the code of the library. It is probably defined in another library or a header. In other words, you have more libs to get. Enjoy.

Now if you were in fedora, I'd suggest fireing up yumex (or puppy hmmm?) and hunting for non installed gtk things. It could also bethat the required thingy is just in a different place.

(Gosh - the things you'd had to do to keep RH9 going as long as this. Is there someone supporting this distro publically? I though it was just hp/compaq that was dealing in RH9 these days?)

Hi Simon

What u said seems to be right. Upgrading to another distro doesn't seem to be approach in my view. There should definitely a solution to the problem and I am in search of it.

Sure there is a solution ... looking at the GIMP (for which gtk is)... you are probably missing libart2 (a vector rendering library - maybe it isn't missing, just old). The others are FreeType2 and FontConfig.

It is also possible you need to upgrade gcc and all it's libraries too.

This is only going to get worse as time goes on.
