first install :

Code:
sudo apt-get install youtube-dl
then, after you do that, you can download movies by opening a terminal, and then entering youtube-dl and then the URL to the video as follows:

Code:
youtube-dl  http://www.youtube.com/video/url/

according the quote's that there're may be invalid file which is execute by vlc player. It may cause of the content of the file had been replace with a new buffer from your browser which is has a same new with the early file.

You better try to buffer it again, and then copy that buffered file into your home directory. What happend when you run the file with vlc player from your home directory?

Hope this can view the main problem regard on your case.

Regards,
Mardi V. Tamma

@prayag pjs-the youtube-dl thing doesnt work.the following output came
bipin@bipin-laptop:~$ Retrieving video webpage... done.
Extracting URL "t" parameter... done.
Requesting video file... failed.
Error: unable to download video data.
Try again several times. It may be a temporary problem.
Other typical problems:

* Video no longer exists.
* Video requires age confirmation but you did not provide an account.
* You provided the account data, but it is not valid.
* The connection was cut suddenly for some reason.
* YouTube changed their system, and the program no longer works.

Try to confirm you are able to view the video using a web browser.
Use the same video URL and account information, if needed, with this program.
When using a proxy, make sure http_proxy has http://hostort format.
Try again several times and contact me if the problem persists.

With something like "yum update". It is good to know that the problem does not come from vlc.

Once the file is "buffered" into your tmp directory, try saving it elsewhere, with the extension .flv. It might be (which I doubt) that vlc needs to know the extension before playing.

Secondly, instead of youtube-dl, have you tried get_flash_video. Could be an option worth looking into.

Cheers

Hi there,

Who is the owner of the file in your /tmp folder??? What permission does this file has??? I don't know, but I never thought of the fact that you might not have the right to play these files. So make sure that you are either the owner of this file, or that you have the rights to play them.

Cheers
