unable to play media files

I recently upgraded my kubuntu from 6.10 to 7.10 using adept. suddenly I cannot play any media files except by using mplayer. most other programs complain about missing plugins. xine cannot play xvid-video, divx-video, mp3-audio, etc. same is true for kaffeine. they _can_ however play the mp3 audio within avi files that cannot be played, which confirms that I have lame properly installed. I have installed all versions of the codecs I could find in adept.
