Unable to open video file

I am unable to open a video file, file type, video_TS. I tried VLC, which gave a reading of "permission denied" when I tried to use it to open the file, and could not open with video player or Banshee. I tried two such DVDs.

I would like to watch the DVD and could do with some help.

Shadow_7 04-13-2017 12:25 PM

permission denied would be the starting point? ugoa of the file versus ugoa of the user trying to use it.

$ man chmod
$ man chown

And then there's codec issues, which could be impossible to bypass by distro means, depending on which distro. Otherwise there's packages like libdvdnav4, libdvdread4, libdvdcss2, dvd+rw-tools, mjpegtools, at least for debian jessie naming conventions. Xine tends to be alright playing dvds. Commercial (encrypted) dvds might be a little harder to get working depending on the laws of your nation/state/community. Which a lot of distros compensate for by NOT providing the needed package to decrypt them. At least by traditional distro means, or official repositories.

mrmazda 04-13-2017 12:31 PM

Do you have libdvdcss2 installed?

In /etc/group are you a member of cdrom or video?

Have you tried mplayer or smplayer to play the DVD?

Novatian 04-13-2017 10:30 PM

Using Mint, I will now try mplayer and Xine. I will for the above packages.

$ man chmod, is this for a terminal window?

The DVD is one I bought. What is a /etc/group, a member?

mrmazda 04-13-2017 10:55 PM

/etc/group defines which users are members of which groups. Not being a member of a certain group can prevent access to a device normally accessible only to members assigned to a group that includes the owner of that device. /dev/cdrom and /dev/dvd are commonly such devices.

Usually, man is run in a terminal window, but that's not the only way to run it, whether for chmod or any other command.

Novation, try using brasero or K3b and save the dvd image file first...

You will need libdvdcss2 installed(and a couple of other dependants)...

Once you save the image, you can play it with either vlc, Xine, mplayer

Most will work, some I have had to mess around with...

gstreamer codecs, like "good" "ugly" run fine, "bad" I have had issue with...

But all in all, the image is the best way to go, playing off a dvd via the video_TS folder, dont always work, some times you can copy to drive and play, but that depends on the encryption used...

novatian, please try to open the file in question from the command line, and show us exact commands issued & their output.
use code tags for code.

fwiw, dvds copied to hard drive are usually played by opening the containing folder with the media player.
this works for vlc, and also for mpv, maybe more.

also please do an
Code:

ls -al
for the file(s) in question (still from above mentioned terminal).

Novatian 04-14-2017 01:41 AM

I have the various "lib" software already, permission is denied to download or copy the Video_TS file and Xine reads xine engine error, input plugin failed to open mrl, and sight unknown error, permission error.

I will have to call in next working day to ask the source if there is an error or method to open these files.

ondoho 04-14-2017 02:13 AM

novatian, we need the directory listing for the folder that contains the file(s) in question.

Novatian 04-14-2017 03:39 AM

How can I find the directory listing?

pan64 04-14-2017 03:46 AM

would be nice to tell us exactly how did you try to play that dvd. Probably you have a file manager and you can look for the DVD in it. You can try a right click/properties and also probably look for permissions (within properties).

mrmazda 04-14-2017 03:50 AM

sudo ls -al full-pathname-of-directory-containing-the-video_TS-file

Novatian 04-14-2017 06:47 AM

I opened the file and put in ls -al and at the bottom is:
-rw-r--r-- 1 bren bren 10385 Apr 14 21:44 .xsession-errors
