Unable to load gnome on Redhat...

Hi...

I have been searching everywhere for a solution to this problem but I have not yet found one. I was hoping someone would be able to help. I'm sort of a newbie so the solution may be very simple.

System:
Red Hat Linux 9 (2.4.22)

When I log into gnome (as root or any user) I get a pop-up that states this error:

"Your session only lasted less then 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of diskspace. Try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix the problem."
- with only an OK button to push

If I push this button the X server seems to restart and I get sent back to the login screen. I can log into failsafe but that's just a command window that doesn't help much.

-------------------------

I am certain that my hardisk has plenty of free space, so it must be something else. This error sort of just appeared out of the blue one day so it seems very odd. I do not think I was installing anything special or doing anything really complicated before the problem occured.

I have tried to read the error file (.xsession-errors), but for some reason the file does not get written. I even went into the XSession file and manually put in a place for the file to be written but that does not seem to change anything.

I would appreciate any help and please let me know if you need anymore information.

Thanks,
Mohit
