unable to connect to mysql

Hello,
I have a mysql server on my debian.
When I try to log on (using mysql -p or phpmyadmin) it says unable to login root@localhost, using password = yes.
I don't think I input the wrong password. What could be the reason ?

How could I reset mysql if the password is wrong (I just have test tables to I don't really care loosing them).

Thanks

verify that the mysql server is running: /usr/bin/safe_mysqld
then try again.

Hello,

The mysql server is running. (/etc/init.d/mysql status)

Moreover, I have found a file (was it /var/mysql/users.???) to which I have access in root only, and the passwords are displayed in it. So now I am sure my password is the right one !

Did you run the initial install script?

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/Installing.html

Specifically:

mysql_install_db

Cool

Cool
normally you don't need that in debian.
If you didn't set mysql password it is empty but i bet you did.

try this URL :
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/Re...rmissions.html

Hello,

In the file /var/lib/mysql/mysql/user.MYD, I see something witch corresponds to my password... but it still won't allow me to connect.
