I may have a very simple problem. I just downloaded the Mandrake 8.0 ISO images from the Mandrake site and installed them on a Pentium II 350 with 320 MB of RAM.

The system installed fine, but after having a couple of problems with a NIC I felt the need to "get all up in the kernel's grill". Now, I've recompiled a couple of kernels in my day, but I would hardly call myself an expert.

First! I had a problem with the configuration... The "kernel-source-2.4.3-20mdk.i586.rpm" file archived in the ISO image seems to be corrupt (the ISO checked out against it's MD5 checksum number though).

Anyway, I downloaded it seperatly and was in business. I ran the "menuconfig" (without X) to squeeze every ounce of CPU power into the compiling process. The compilation went fine (and speedy too, faster than any kernel on the machine before) however, when I go to...

# make modules; make modules_install

My modules won't compile. My friend, and linux mentor/partner has RedHat 7.1 mit den 2.4 kernel and has the same prooblem. What gives? Is this a change in the 2.4 kernel or am I making a stupid mistake?

P.S. I get messages like "<error1> directory doesn't exist" or something like that.

P.P.S. I also see that even though I do a ...

# make dep; make clean; make bzImage

I find a "vmlinux" as the finished product as opposed to the traditional "bzImage" and it won't boot, does this have anything to do with the modules not compiling?
