Unable to compile c files in ubuntu 8.04

Dear all,

can you do me little favor for me.I tried to compile a c file in ubuntu 8.04 platform.I got error like this

first.c:1:18: error: stdio.h: No such file or directory
first.c: In function ‘main’:
first.c:5: warning: incompatible implicit declaration of built-in function ‘printf’

I could nt fix that error.

You need to install the development files for "libc":

apt-get install libc6-dev

I find it rather amusing that the compiler depends on "libc6" but not on its development files - then again if you're building a kernel you don't need the libc6 development files, so the dependencies are technically correct even if in reality most people (if not all) would also want to build executable code other than the kernel.
