unable to boot from hdd after mint installation

hello all. i am new to linux and need your help. i have a hp pro 3120. 500gb wd blue hdd with 3gb memory. i installed ubuntu 16.04 on it and then upgraded to 17.04. it worked fine until one day it failed to boot and asked for a manual fsck. i did not know how to fsck the drive and still dont so i installed mint from a live cd and since then the pc always calls for the boot disc to be placed in correct drive and wont boot from the installed os on the hdd. i can only use my pc from the live cd. can anyone help with this?

At first glace I'd think that you have some sort of loader issue. Since it did work or at least you report it did work correctly until the file system check I'd assume that some data on the drive is off or has been locked out or damaged.

Sooo.... do you want to try to fix what you have to just do a clean install again?

Is Mint the only OS on it?
Did you accept the default for the bootloader installation?
Is it a UEFI or older MBR install?
Did you change the boot priority in the BIOS to the HD?

Above questions would be nice to know also.

To check from live you usually,

Determine the naming of the internal drive. Gparted or fdisk or other will show name.

Then you run a command from terminal to check the drive. Knowing the format to being with helps.

By the way, I think Gparted can check this WD drive from menu.

Command line. https://www.maketecheasier.com/check...em-fsck-linux/

i think it is the only os on drive as durin installation it gave the option of erasing everything on drive which i accepted. not sure what is or if i did accept the default for the boot loader installation. any way to check? not sure if its uefi but the bios has everything placed in groups ..... like floppy group, hdd group etc. only place i saw this groupin was on a laptop with uefi. not sure. thanks for the call on resetting the boot priority. just did and now there is a black screen with cursor

Boot the Mint installation DVD/flash drive then go to the site below and download the boot repair software using PPA option explained on the site. Then run it as instructed and select the option to Create BootInfo Summary and post a link to the output here. Someone should be able to advise you on your options.

If it said to run file system check, then I'd do that at least. It should not hurt anything.

You don't have Grub code in the MBR so it won't boot. Your Mint partition doesn't show the Grub files and the output doesn't show the grub.cfg file which is the menu you need on boot. Probably easiest to do a re-install and accept the defults. Use the Something Else option and verify that when you select "Device for bootloader Installation" it shows /dev/sda which it should. The link below has a brief tutorial and under step 5 it shows the option to install bootloader.

Using the manual (Something Else) option, when you select the partition to reinstall (sda1) to by highlighting it in the main window, click the Change tab below the window to get the Edit Partition window. In this new window, click the down arrow to the far right of the Mount point and select the first option which should be the / symbol and click OK.
