Unable to Associate MIME Types and URI Schemes to Applications in Firefox

Admittedly, this problem is pertaining to a Windows computer, for a family member, however the Firefox configuration method is the same cross-OS, and my familiarity is with Linux, and this forum, so I will ask here. Furthermore, though it is a Windows PC that has prompted me to ask, it is a problem I'm having on my Slackware box as well, so there.

My entire family use the Tor Browser Bundle. I use it for privacy reasons, however all of us download torrent files. However, with the TBB, I cannot find a way of associating .torrent files, or magnet links, to applications such as uTorrent, or Rtorrent.

Is there an easy way of making this association, preferably not only cross-distro, but cross-OS (as noted above, I'm having this problem on both Windoze and Linux boxen). The only way I can think of doing this, is by directly editing mimeTypes.rdf, however after trying that, TBB (read:Firefox) reverted back to the factory default version, and FF's built in file type association editor is severely lacking. I may well submit a bug report about this, because this is basics, but I digress.

Many thanks

I thought this was possible under Edit->Preferences on the Applications tab?
