Ugly, Ugly OS selection screen still in Kubuntu and Ubuntu
 

After all these years, you'd think that there would be a selection screen for multiboot OSs in Kubuntu and Ubuntu 10.4 that would be reasonably pretty. Nope.

I wonder why they went to such lengths to beautify their desktops but just didn't bother at all with the initial selection screens for us multiple users. That white on black or color on black really sucks. But the new OSs are beautiful and run smooth. I've been trying to break them but I cannot.

Anyone know a way to change this?

There are different bootloader configurations and splash screens to theme the OS selection, but it is a very low priority so the stock OS doesn't bother with it. Generally it is left to the user to do that level of customization.

Tks for reply. I believe that you're referring to 'menu.lst' in the nominally earlier Grub. 10.4, in both Ubuntu and Kubuntu, uses Grub2, and it takes a while to adjust the mind to working in this manner. Instead of merely editing the 'menu.lst' file, one must set up what I call "Bumper" files which are called by Grub2 and then assimilated into the boot stream.

Perhaps that's an idea someone could implement: A gui to change the grub image installable as a .deb.

Grub2 is still a bit new, it works, but I haven't seen anyone come up with a pretty face for it. Suspect it's a bit or work for the few seconds it's on the screen.

Mint comes with a nice(r) Grub2 screen. I agree that the default boot screen is rather lackluster.

GRUB has supported background images for a long time now. The backgrounds really make it look a lot nicer. Plus, I'm not sure how they did it, but openSUSE has an animated pingus background.
