Ugly icons in Synaptic package manager

Recently I upgraded to Kubuntu 16.10 from 16.04, as I said in another thread here.
When I did that, it had some unwanted side-effects. One of them was that Ark can't find RAR anymore.

Another is this, where the package icons in Synpatic have changed, to an ugly outline scheme that's hard to read. It's terrible. The older solid color icons were much easier to read.

Here's a screenshot. As you can see, the blue checkmarks on the package icons are difficult to see.

Is there any way to change this?

Close SPM.
Pick a new theme. #Never used KDE so IDK here.
Restart SPM.

terminal >
Code:
whereis rar
paste result please.

I've switched themes back and forth, none have any effect on the icons that Synaptic is using.

The output of whereis rar is:

Code:
rar: /usr/bin/rar /usr/share/man/man1/rar.1.gz
It's where it should be. I'm puzzled by this because it started with my upgrade to 16.10.

looks like the normal breeze icons to me.
probably a gtk3/breeze icon design mismatch/f*ckup.
synaptic recently changed its ui from gtk2 to gtk3, maybe that's what happened to you?
i also liked the gtk2 interface better.

Have you tried the KDE settings for GTK apps? Sorry I ran Plasma for a short time, didn't like it, uninstalled it so I don't have it available. However I remember under Appearance there being a panel for GTK apps.

If not...

Last resort is to use GSettings which should be installed if you have GTK3 installed.

Code:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface icon-theme theme-name
ETA: I agree, that is horrible, and whoever decided that those cons were usable should be shot.

Yes, I've tried changing the settings in Gnome Application Style, under Application Style. Unfortunately, nothing I've done has affected the look of Synaptic at all. Gsettings doesn't work either, apparently. I tried setting it to Oxygen, but no luck.

I've signed up to the mailing list, and hopefully I can get help there. This really is an annoying problem, and yes... they ought to be shot, those icons are eyesores...

Yeah, that was me that posted that thread. I've fixed the issue, as I said, by installing the last version of Ark from 16.04, but I still have that nagging issue with ugly icons in Synaptic.

ooh sorry I just seen the mention of ark and rar not working. sooo try installing more icon packs, or look in your icon directory and look and see what ya got, pick one you like then open up your
Code:
/usr/share/applications
find the desktop file for it then edit it. Their is an icon line in the file where you can direct an app to show whatever icon you want (provided it is the correct format/extension)

Quote:
Exec=/usr/bin/gparted-pkexec %f
Icon=gparted
Terminal=false
bam brain is back in happy state.

going back to your original post, (an after thought)

what desktop you running? Oh wait it is Ubunututututu, well nonetheless, that looks like it should be listed under themes not icons. if you're not already going there, and just using bad terminology. that controls the fonts and everything borders and such, whereas icon only deal with icons.

GTK+
try using
lxappearance

cheers!

I'm using Kubuntu 16.10, with KDE Plasma 5.7.5. I'm not sure I was using bad terminology, as the package icons inside Synaptic are still icons. I never meant the system icon for the app itself. There might have been some confusion though.

Regardless, I've changed around the themes, and nothing works. It never makes any difference at all in the look of Synaptic.

edit: I tried switching back and forth between both GTK2 and GTK3 themes. None have any effect on the appearance of Synaptic, including the menu icons (Reload, Mark All Upgrades, etc). It's like Synpatic isn't even using GTK now. But that doesn't make any sense, as I'm running the same version (0.83) as before I upgraded to Kubuntu16.10.

I don't use Synaptic, but does it have a config file anywhere you can look at to see if the theme is set by it that you can change manually, or has that already been looked into?

is their a preference or settings selection in one of the drop down menus that may help?

the core problem here is that synaptic has changed form a gtk2 interface to a gtk3 interface.
so there's no going back really, unless you mange to compile it with gtk2.

so the underlying problem - that CAN be changed - is icon theme integration between KDE and GTK apps.
