UEFI/Graphical Boot problems

I've just built a new PC.. with a MSI x79a-gd45 (8d) motherboard.

All the hardware seems to be running ok.

This is also the first time I have installed/had a UEFI PC.

First of all I tried booting a couple of my live cds to install a new system but none would boot.. after some research I found out they have to have the ability to boot in UEFI mode.

I downloaded the latest ubuntu (12.04) which is my least fave distro.. but would do for now.. and it booted to the grub menu for the live-cd.. but then when I try booting to the live demo or just install the screen goes black and I dont see anything else.. not even any kind of verbose or out of range messages...

any help would be appreciated.

Edit/Update:

I downloaded and burned the iso for 'Archboot' and again.. got it to boot but then I try to load any of the options from grub.. screen just goes black and I see no more..

I am guessing it might be some graphics card driver issue... it's an nvidia card.. usually never have any trouble with them... but I still get no message on the screen telling me anything.

as another update... tried a number of things... I read about using 'nomodeset' and a couple of other similar graphics options to the boot strings in grub... sadly none worked and I still just end up with a black screen. I even uninstalled the graphics card and installed my old one..same thing.. black screen..

so I am guessing it may be some other component.

I really don't want to do something drastic like... install windows... been windows free for 8-9 years..

download a new (10.4) version of bios from the msi site and install it from usb flash drive. it helped me with the same problem on this motherboard

I forgot I made this topic... but yes it was indeed the motherboard BIOS.
