Ubuntu Trouble with GT 630 install, works ok in win7
Starting new thread as this is Ubuntu 14.04 not mint.
I could not maqke it work in Ubuntu, so booted win7 and installed driver ok and video card is good.
So I installed the driver using Ubuntu driver software detect for, it loaded 346 stuff. Reboot, the screen goes thru turmoil of lines and colors and bounces me back to the login page.
So what to do now?
I have gnome installed and was able to login to Metacity flashback, comes up with huge 320 by 240 screen, went to synaptic and uninstalled all nvidia crap, rebooted ok using Ubuntu driver in Ubuntu desktop. Detected card reinstalled 346 driver which it said was 'tested' and reboot, does not work again, whorl of colors and lines and bounced back to the login menu.
So how to fix it? Unfortunately posting this from win7 now. I always have trouble with video drivers on linux, and takes a while to figure it out, so what do I do wrong??
OK, this card may be a FAKE Nvidia gt630!
Even though the windows nvidia driver installs, on the reboot, it has a problem and can not start, so no drivers get loaded.

is a link showing the defective card that can not start. It does not work in windows, it does not work in Linux. So it is an Ebay seller, and I opened a case to have it returned which the seller says he does not accept returns. So we will see what Ebay will do.
It shows up ok in Nvidia settings, and runs Gnome good.
Windows 7, though to me is still a problem. Instead of installing the nvidia driver off the nvidia website, (which does not work), I used the CD disc then came with the card, and it installed an old international? version of a driver. But I cant upgrade it as it fails every time. So dont know what to think about this card. Long time ago, I bought a card and it was also a fake. Years later, I found out the maker had put a mobile chip on the card. The only driver that would ever work for it was the one came on CD with the card. Seems like same thing now with this card and windows. Maybe the driver inf's has been hacked to make it install in windows.
When I search on the win driver installed version #, I get references again it seems to a mobile chipset...also seems to be an international driver??, when the driver off the cd is extracted, 'international' is in the directory name...
I was watching it scroll by, the xorg-edgers log, and it mentioned the lenovo thinkpad and dell latitude peculiarities modifications?
Those are laptops, could this be a mobile gpu on this pcie card?
When it bounces back on a failure, I simply cntrl-alt-F1, and login into terminal console to install the driver.
I am still trying to determine if the card is worth keeping.
