Question Ubuntu Postinst Warning?

This is my first time installing Linux, and all was going well and I got my first error:

"Failed to start the X server (your ghapical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagose the pronblem?"

I did some searching, found the command to use, (sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg) and I followed on-screen prompts to continue installation. As before, everything was going fine when I got to the color depth options, selected the default 24 bit colors, and then I come to this error:

xserver-xorg postinst warning: overwriting possible-customised configuration file

when I try the previous command, it starts me back to the "Auto detect graphics card" page, keyboard, monitor, etc and it comes to the same error.

What command should I use to continue? Thanks!

do the same thing again with sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg except try 16 on the color, worth a try, it might fix it...

tried that, nothing. I also tried for all the options to NOT write to a file and it had same error. I tried the color depth all the way down to 8 and that did nothing also.

any other suggestions?

check out /var/log/xorg.log and open it with a text editor and look for any warnings or reasons for xorg not wanting to give you a desktop, sometimes a mis-configuration of a mouse can cause the whole thing to now want to load up.

also if you have an LCD monitor the configuration will be a little different than with a CRT monitor.

the whole configuration is stored in /etc/X11/xorg.config
