Ubuntu Opera Java

I recently downloaded opera for use in ubuntu hoary because I started having problems with firefox. I like it fine, however, I'm having trouble getting it to work with java. Here's what I get if I run it from the command line:

Code:
$ opera -debugjava
opera: [java] There seems to be a preloaded version of Xt.
There is a workaround for this problem in the opera
startup script. If that workaround fails, opera will
most likely crash every time it tries to use Java.
The workaround seems to have failed. Java will be disabled.
       Technical explanation:
There is a problem with the order of loading Xt and
Java. If Xt is loaded before libawt (part of Java),
Java will crash when it tries to access the screen.
The workaround is based on using LD_PRELOAD to load
       libawt.so first.

opera: [java] Disabling java due to potential problems. If you know
what you are doing, you can set the environment variable
OPERA_FORCE_JAVA_ENABLED to '1' to override this.
The actual problems should be described above
any ideas what I need to do to get it working? also, how do I get flash and such working with it?

EDIT: also, how can I make it so that when I click on text hyperlinks, say in and IM window, it will load opera and load the website. I currently have opera set as default browser, but it just opens, and doesn't open the website up...

Opera Software - Knowledge Base

Flash can be enabled by checking "Enable plugins". You can check what plugins that are installed by typing about:plugins in URL bar.

Opera doen't support IcedTea or other plugins => go for JRE installation!

Hi!

I struggled to make Java work in Opera 11.51 under Ubuntu 11.04.

Though pointing Opera to the Mozilla-plugin folder, as well as copying the content of that into the Opera/plugins folder, nothing worked.

Eventually I learned that Opera does not support the IcedTea-plugin or any of the other commonly used Java-plugins.

So... I installed JRE (through Synaptic), sun-java6-jre, and told Opera to look in the folder for the plugin (Opera => Settings => Preferences => Advanced => Content => Plugin options => Change path => Add => /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.26

Voila. Now everything that uses Java runs NQA...

You do realize you replied to a thread from 2005?

Take a second and look at the date of old threads before resurrecting a dead thread.

Hi! Sure.
Just found it a bit curious that no-one had brought this info out before (I am trying to post it in other places as well. It's curious how Linux still insist on some sort of elitist approach, though the Ubuntu distro as well as Synaptic package manager has gone some way of getting rid of that very obvious problem...
