Are you saying that you were greeted with a console prompt instead of the gdm login screen?

If so, try (I'm not sure if the version you are using uses upstart or not so I will list two):

Code:

sudo service gdm restart
or

Code:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
What graphics card are you using?

Are you using a proprietary driver?

You may also want to edit the title to
Ubuntu [wubi] login black screen at boot
So people will know that you are using wubi.

amritpalpathak 07-14-2011 11:18 PM

I am using Nvida graphics card

amritpalpathak 07-15-2011 12:06 AM

Both commands gives the error

/usr/bin/basename :2:Syntax Error word unexpected (expecting ")")

Thanks

Well till now i am unable to fix it.I just login into black screen successfully.I can do "cd" to home folder and others too.I tried to copy my important directories from home folder to hard drive but still i gives the strange error.
I did.

sudo cp kannel /media/data
Here data is name of hard drive .It gives following error message.

/bin/cp: /:Syntax Error: word unexpected(expecting")")

Please help me to copy it so then i will again installed my ubuntu(no option left)

Thanks

You installation seems to have a weird problem.

You might be best served using an Ubuntu LiveCD to mount the partitions that contain your data and your data partition and copy the files over from there.

amritpalpathak 07-15-2011 10:19 AM

Now i am using Live cd .Can you please help me how i can save my data ?
I will be greatful to you

post the output of

Code:

sudo fdisk -l

Do you know which partition contains your ubuntu installation?

If you are unsure, go to

http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net

follow the instructions and post the RESULTS.txt with your reply.

Code:

sudo mkdir /win
sudo mount /dev/sda8 /win
sudo mkdir /vdisk
sudo mount -o loop /win/ubuntu/disks/root.disk /vdisk

Once running those commands, open up Places>Computer>Filesystem>vdisk, and you should find the contents of your root.disk in there. Now you can backup your data to external media, and reinstall Ubuntu with Wubi if you like.

You can also try running:
Code:

sudo fsck /win/ubuntu/disks/root.disk
to fix any filesystem errors that may be interfering with the boot

From the liveCD.

you can also

Code:

sudo mount /dev/sda7 /media/data
and copy your data to there, if that is what you choose

Then, if you still can't boot to the GUI :

Log into your ubuntu install (at the black screen) and try

Code:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --reinstall nvidia-common
This could also apply to you:

Screen Blanks/Monitor Turns Off
Using a laptop with a GeForce Go card, or connecting the sole display via DVI on a dual-head system sometimes results in the screen not receiving a picture. This is caused by the driver outputting video to the VGA port on the graphics card, instead of DVI.

The usual hint that you have this problem is when you hear the startup sound but nothing appears on the screen. If you do not hear any sound, you are more than likely experiencing unrelated problems.

This is a launchpad bug about displays on digital outputs being blank when using NVIDIA binary driver, and can be resolved by editing your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file:

Switch to the console (Try using ctrl+alt+F1, or reboot and select recovery mode from the GRUB menu.)
Use your text editor to open /etc/X11/xorg.conf (try sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf).
Find the line that says Section "Screen"
Insert a new line that says Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP".
Save the file. If you had to restart into recovery mode, type reboot, otherwise restart your display using sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart.
