Ubuntu Live CD on old-world G3 Mac
 

Might have the wrong forum...sorry if I do :)

I installed BootX and copied it into the System Folder per the instructions. The boot dialog isn't a problem, I just want to avoid trashing the OS.

I copied vmlinux to "Linux Kernels" in the System Folder and initrd.gz to the System Folder.

On my first try, I got a kernel panic. I hadn't set a root device because I wasn't sure what it was. Before the system locked up, it announced that the CD-ROM was hda. Second try, I set the root device to /dev/hda. Same problem.

And that's it. It takes toggling the power supply to get it restarted.

I'm using BootX 1.1.3 because the newer versions won't fit on a floppy, and I'm out of CDs for the time being.

Any suggestions?

I run into that on blue & White G3s as well - every G3 I have ever tried Linux on, in fact. I have come to the conclusion that Linux for Macintoshes stinks.

Where can I get BootX? The penguinppc.org seems to be down. :(

I've once did that and it doesn't ever seem to work on a G3 >_<

EDIT- BTW the site is running fine now ;) -EDIT

I ran accross this issue surfing around a few months back. From what I gather, try adding the following to the kernel argument field
casper/enable=true casper-udeb/snapshot/backing-file=/cdrom/casper/filesystem.cloop --

(all of that on one line)

I'm surprised nobody said "It works, so stop complaining." I know it works now. It must have gone through a bit of down time. :o
I am also having problems booting Linux on my Power Mac 7200. I, however, am going to try your suggestion, petespin27, and see if it works.
