It sounds like the master boot record on the disk got corrupted. You should be able to reinstall GRUB without reinstalling Ubuntu.
IMO you should have waited to post this until you got home. What's the point of writing a question when you don't have the details?

....and I'm sorry, but editing the original question away like that isn't considered very friendly. In theory, at least, your question and the answer to it could have helped someone else: Now, all that anyone in future knows is that there is some condition which may have something to do with the MBR (and it can be cured).

Umm...Because the problem was solved..?
I reinstalled ubuntu, and all is fine. Why would I keep people pondering and typing solutions to my problem if they are no longer in existance.  Why bump a useless thread.

In the future, if you have a problem and later find a solution it is helpful to post the solution rather then delete the question. Many people get help from this community without even posting because they are able to find similar questions and the solutions in other peoples posts.
