Ubuntu & Gnome Desktop Freezing

Short and sweet:

I've got Ubuntu installed on a Dell Inspiron 1K system, using Gnome (because KDE installed via apt-get but crashed hellaciously upon actually USING it). I have no idea why but every so often my desktop will literally disappear. The panels are USUALLY usable but sometimes they freeze/disappear/die as well.

Someone somewhere on the net said that it may be some networking issue?

I write a nice script to auto-set my Wireless card to my home network, that i run once I'm in Gnome. I prefer the script over the network wizard, because i can easily use another network if i'm not at home.

I digress...when the desktop disappears, all open windows are still functional, so it's not a system lockup. Does anyone have any ideas/fixes/workarounds for this?

Thanks in advance.

Success?

Did it work? Didn't happen again? I'd hate to have to reinstall all those packages =P

yes it worked, but only after i downloaded all the packages off the internet when it first prompts you during the install....and then i had to upgrade to hoary, but i think that's just because i have a new computer....if you are running warty you can always try updating to hoary first
