Question Ubuntu 8.10 - excessive CPU usage & heating

I have installed ubuntu 8.10 on my HP laptop. I am trying it for the first time. I have used other distros like fedora, debian etc. but Ubuntu uses my CPU more and the laptop fan is trying hard to cool it down which is not secure and annoying too.

Any suggestions?

A zombie? Try to run the command "top" in a terminal. See if there is anything you don't expect for usage and processes. Do you get the same behavior if you run 8.10 as a live-cd?
