Talking U.S. Robotics on rh7.1

I am trying to install U.S. Robotics 56k model 5686 external modem but linux does not recognize it.

I have checked the port in windows and set the modem port using Configure Modem dialog box in Modemtool.

Searching for the modem during internet connection setup yields no result. Using debug I get: Wv Dial: Internet dialer version 1.41 Cannot open /dev/ttySO:Input/Output error. Error: Unable to initialize modem DIALING FINISHED

If I use statserial /dev/cua0 at the command prompt I get statserial: TIOCMGET failed: Input/output error.

What is wrong?????????????????????
