Two X speed issues when running as regular user that are not present as root

Hey, I'm running Gentoo, and I'm having two really big performance hits -- one when KDE first starts, and another when Firefox tries to open a new window.

Firefox is version 1.5.0.7, and KDE is 3.5.4, and when either is running as root, there is no delay. But when run under my standard user account, KDE takes nearly 30 seconds before displaying the splash screen, and FF freezes for about the same time when trying to open any sort of new window. Also, after KDE has been started for the first time, if I re-login, it happens at full speed again.

There's probably something simple that needs to be cleaned up/tweaked, but I'm stumped as where to find it.

Thanks in advance.

Is your hostname in the list of /etc/hosts ?

Yes, it is.

# IPv4 and IPv6 localhost aliases
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
127.0.0.1 tegatai.localdomain tegatai
::1 tegatai

I've also discovered something else with FF -- if I'm accessing pages from my local web server, they will open in a new window with no speed hit, UNLESS I have already been web surfing, in which case even local files opened in a new window will cause a slowdown.
