TV, Windows Emulator, Linux
 

I have a Hauppauge 150 TV Tuner. I use it while in Windows XP Pro to watch TV.

My main question: How can I watch TV in Linux?

Should I use a Windows emulator in Linux (Linux MEPIS 3.43) to access the TV Tuner, so I would not have to boot into Windows everytime I want to watch TV?

If yes, then what Windows emulator should I use?

If no, then what else could I do to watch TV via Linux instead of Windows?

Specs: Dual boot: XP Pro 1st hdd. MEPIS 3.43 2nd hdd. 2.4 ghz proc. 1 gig ram.

search around on the hardware section. what you need is to load the appropriate module and use an app such as xawtv or tvtime. google is also an invaluable tool ;)

You need the ivtv drivers

It will not work with TVTime, or xawtv, or any of the common bttv television applications.

You will need MythTV or Freevo or a similar application.

So, if I understand your post correctly, it means that the "ivtv" drivers will NOT work with TVtime, xawtx or any common bttv applications?

Is that correct?

BTW...what does bttv mean?

So, I need to: a) get the appropriate driver(s) and b) get the appropriate application

Am I correct on the above 2 issues as well?

I noticed much of the info about mythtv and programs like it seem to revolve around the "tivo" concept. Although that is nice, all I really want is to be able to watch tv. If I feel like recording something on tv, I can always fiddle with that later. My main concern is simply to watch tv on my computer and use my IR blaster (or perhaps some other remote control) to change channels.

No more, no less. Just simple channel surfing.

Would you folks still recommend mythtv for my relatively simple needs, or would you recommend something else? If you would recommend something else, then what?

I have yet to download the ivtv stuff...would I still need to do that too if all I want to do is "channel surf?"

SUSE 10 picked up my hauppauge PCI Card right away, and I could watch with KDE TV. My USB 2.0 Card however, MSI Vox, seems to be a no go. I'm hoping to try and use Wine to run the drivers and the software, haven't tried it yet tho. You might be able to find the windows software and run it with wine?
