Trying to shrink VMWare image when zipped

I have a Suse VMWare image that I am running under Windows and would like to shrink the image when it is zipped up.

Deleting some large applications didn't make any difference, not surprisingly, as this only made the virtual DASD available for re-use.

I would like to somehow zero out the unused DASD segments up to the top of the currently allocated space so that this can be compressed better by 7-zip.

I'm not necessarily trying to reduce the size of the virtual disk file in Windows, as long as it compresses better.
