open a terminal and enter
cd dvd (if you're in /home/Angel)
cd <name of the other folder>
./configure (don't forget the dot)
make
su (swith to root)
<enter root password>
make install

i'm lost now.... oms is NOT Xine. oms is a different dvd player all together. and oms realy is not very good as far as dvd software goes. i'd strongly recommend using mplayer. rpm's available http://mplayerhq.hu

Xine is tough to install because you need all kinds of dependencies (extra files). Just use Mplayer.

I second Chris, as always because I am merely a drone here

But, to get xine installed you are trying too hard. Xine comes with most distros, and I don't think RH 8 would be any different. Check your install CD's and find the package for Xine, click it, and it will install with your package manager. If there are dependencies (which is likely) install those as well, and then xine.

But really, once you see what xine is, uninstall it, then go get mplayer as was suggested above. A better "bang for your buck" or something like that.

Cool

Well... don't install mplayer because it's easier, install mplayer because it's much much much better.

It doesn't have DVD menus. Thats the downside of Mplayer, but it's easy to install.

How is that? I can't watch any directors commentaries, and how to I go to a specific scene in the movie with Mplayer? I would use the Microsoft Windows Media Player any day or WinDVD, however those are not available for Linux.

No but xine and ogle are, and these both support DVD menus.

angelrod

You can get xine RPMs from http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/~jcm/skyblade/

BTW OMS is not xine.

Anyway, just to give you some other options out there, you might wanna head over to www.freshmeat.net and type DVD Player. Also check out Ogle, a very easy to use DVD Player as well.

In the end, here's what I use:

mplayer for DVD's that I just want to watch the movie with, no waiting for the movie to queue up to the title screen, and all the hokie crap, just want to watch a movie.

Ogle for DVD's that I want to see all the "hokey" crap on, and see the directors commentaries, extras, deleted scenes, and whatever else besides just watching the movie straight up.

Xine when my fingers are broken, I want my system to not do anything else, my eyes are bleeding, and I am bored and wanna try to crash my system In other words, never.

The nice thing about all this is that you can use different things to achieve the same goal as someone else using their favorite tools.

Linux is sure nice isn't it?

Cool

Now I don't want to start a flame war, but this is totally contrary to my experiences. I find xine great for both watching all the "hokey" crap and just watching the movie (I just choose the appropriate pluggin). Mplayer on the other hand, required a great deal of work to get it up and running, and it it still doesn't give any audio for DVDs. Ogle is okay but doesn't seem to support anywhere near the number of formats that xine supports. My system has never crashed because of xine (or any other media player for that matter).
